Milan Cathedral The works presented in this 2-CD set were composed expressly for Milan Cathedral or in its cultural environment and are performed here by the Cathedral musicians. Some of the scores, kept in the Choir archive, are still handwritten, and represent six centuries of uninterrupted musical tradition. The cathedral had an organ as early as the 14th-century and the choir had its beginnings in the early 15th century. By 1938, there were seven organs, playable as one, comprising 15,350 pipes. One CD is devoted entirely to organ works (some for multiple organs, such as the Bossi piece) and the other to works for organ and choir. Click picture for repertoire $12.98 1835 Morettini OrganThe 1835 Morettini Organ in the charming Italian hilltop castle village of Panicale (population 510) is located in the Collegiate Church of San Michele Arcangelo and was built in Morettini�s workshop in Perugia, 22 miles east. The organ was restored in 2000 by Eugenio Becchetti, who plays wonderfully in this recording. Works are drawn from 18th- and 19th-century composers, most of whom are anonymous. The style is largely based on opera and the percussion devices in the organ are well used in a few of these works. The composer, Giovanni Battista Martini (1796-1784), was a musical theorist, priest, and significant influence on the young Mozart.
