Samuel Rousseau Organ WorkspadNEW! Samuel Rousseau was the choir director at St-Clotilde in Paris, collaborating with Franck during the latter 15 years of Francks tenure as titulaire organist there. Rousseau adopted some characteristics of Francks organ composing in his own compositions for organ. Kurt Lueders provides a fine essay on the composer and Esteban Elizondo writes on the firm that built the organ Lueders plays brilliantly, Stoltz Frres of Paris. The rare 3-46 Stoltz organ of 1889 is comparable to Cavaill-Coll. Click the headline for more information, repertoire, and to order.

Jess Guridi, Complete Organ Works, Vol. 1padNEW! Guridi (1886-1961) has great repute as a Basque and Spanish composer of the 20th century. A pupil of Vincent dIndy and Joseph Jongen, his style can be situated in late romanticism with nationalist traits. His feeling for the organ may be characterized by two aspects: that of the religious servant he was and that of an outstanding harmonic craftsman. Esteban Elizondo Iriarte plays the 1889 Stoltz-Frres organ in Iglesia San Pedro Apstol, Bergara (Basque Country).

1889 Stoltz Freres Organ Survives in Basque CountrypadNEW! A surprisingly rich and interesting cross section of late-romantic music by Basque composers is played by Esteban Elizondo, a specialist in this rarely heard yet very worthy music at St. Peters Church in Bergara in the heart of the Basque country. Preserved there is a 46rank, 3m organ by Stoltz Frres of Paris, entirely as originally built, including its original pitch, and, hence, is perhaps the most representative of the extant Stoltz organs. Its tonal integrity, the gentle sound of its overblowing stops, and the outstanding quality of its 12 reed stops make it comparable to Cavaill-Coll organs in the Basque region. J. C. F. Fischer Organ WorkspadOn the recently restored 1714 Balthasar Knig organ in Niederehe, Serge Schoonbroodt plays the complete organ works of Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer (1656-1746). J. S. Bach knew Ariadne Musica, composed in 1702, quoting one theme from it in the Well-Tempered Clavier, perhaps in tribute to Fischers 20 preludes and fugues composed in 19 of the 24 chromatic keys to demonstrate an equal-beating temperament. Blumen-Strauss (Floral Bouquet) is an anthology of 8 suites of 8 pieces in each that almost certainly were composed for use in church services, as are 5 Ricercars based on well-known hymns. 1912 G. Stahlhuth "International" Organ RestoredpadNaji Hakim plays the Stahlhuth organ at St. Martin Church in Dudelange in Luxembourg, restored in 2002 by Thomas Jann, entirely reversing the neobaroquefication that had occurred, badly, in the 1960s. Georg Stahlhuth (1830-1913 was an ideal choice to build the organ of 1912 at Dudelange following Albert Schweitzers conceptions adopted in Vienna in 1909 as the International Guidelines for Organbuilding. In splendid acoustics, Hakims playing of Liszt, Karg-Elert, Langlais, Franck, and both an improvisation of his own and a composed work, is wonderful, of course, and the organ sounds fabulous. The CD booklet greatly informs us about this organ and its builder, and the exceptional characteristics recaptured in the restoration. Click on the headline for more information and to order.
