Writes Herrick; With the discovery of this superb copy of an organ so closely connected with one of Sweelincks pupils, I was able to fulfil a long-cherished dream to record Sweelincks keyboard music on a really suitable instrument. Students at Pite School of Music have the opportunity and advantage . . . to learn older repertoire with the right sounds in their ears . . . and the issue of authentic fingering; as well as the challenge posed by the sub-semitones and the short octave in the bass. Hyperion 2-CD set

NEW! The 1611 organ in the parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Niederndodeleben, Germany, was built by Heinrich Compenius, Jr. in 1611. It was mostly destroyed in the Thirty Years War. Retaining what he could, Matthias Hartmann, an apprentice of Schnitgers, built a new instrument in 1753. Jrg Dutschke recently restored it to its 1753 condition and it is played here by Barry Jordan, organist at the cathedral in nearby Magdeburg.

NEW! Johann Ludwig Krebs (1713-1780) is considered, beyond Bachs own sons, as the most significant of J. S. Bachs pupils. Krebs developed in his works an individual style, combining Baroque elements with the new sensitive and gallant style in a way in which no other did and exploited the tonal possibilities of the organ. In this series, Beatrice-Maria and Gerhard Weinberger play in very large south German abbeys and churches where the famous large organs by Gabler and Holzhay were built to exploit the rising gallant style.

NEW! Johann Kaspar Kerll (1627-1693), born in Saxony of a Protestant organist, converted to Catholicism and worked for many years in Vienna. The transmission of Kerlls music is fragmentary at least 11 operas and many other works are lost. Several motets, masses and keyboard works survive. This recording concerns Kerlls organ works, nearly all of which show a strong Italian influence. With consummate musicality, Matthias Krampe plays the organ from 1689 in the church of St. Veit am Vogau (Steiermark, Austria), restored in 2002 by Kuhn. On the recently restored 1714 Balthasar Knig organ in Niederehe, Serge Schoonbroodt plays the complete organ works of Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer (1656-1746). J. S. Bach knew Ariadne Musica, composed in 1702, quoting one theme from it in the Well-Tempered Clavier, perhaps in tribute to Fischers 20 preludes and fugues composed in 19 of the 24 chromatic keys to demonstrate an equal-beating temperament. The Sun Organ is named for the remarkable case built by Johann Conrad Bchau ca. 1700 for the large Church of St. Peter and Paul in the German town of Grlitz on the Nei_e River at the border with Poland. Bchau dispersed 17 suns symmetrically over the front of the case, arranging pipes of the Pedal Mixture XII as the spokes of a wheel in each sun and capping the center of each with a golden disc. Within the case was a 3m organ of 57 stops completed after six years of effort, in 1703, by the famed Eugenio Casparini who was 74 years old when he started the project in 1697. It became the most famous organ in Silesia, but Andreas Silbermann wrote after a visit, I would be much more fond of it if I had not played and heard it myself . . . It was entirely replaced in 1928 by an electropneumatic organ which no longer played by 1978 and was removed from the historic case, wherein the famous Sun Mixture remained along with 29 pipes of a wooden Onda Maris. Mathis built a brand new organ in the case in 1997, with 64 stops on three manuals including 2 stops at 32 pitch as well as recreations of stops and devices in the original Sun organ, including several bird calls and drums. The musical Reinhard Selliger plays.

Hassler: Variations on La Monica; Three Italian Madrigals; Two German Songs. Scheidt: Fantasia super lo son ferito; Cantio gallica Est-cd Mars?

Hans Leo Hassler (1564-1612) of Nuremberg is known there as "the greatest German musician of his time," he having studied music in Italy. His monumbental 31 variations on this very popular tune plays for 39 minutes, thus there is no time on the CD for his other 110 works for organ! But, the CD treats us to five of his charming vocal works sung by five excellent musicians as well as the Scheidt organ works. Georges Guillard plays the historic 1745 Adrien Carpentier organ at the L'eglise d'Auxi-le-Chateau, where the local land baron opposed the purchase of an organ, writing that its twelve proponents were, a "butcher not knowing how to write," a "bird-brained carpenter," etc.

1624 Scherer Organ
pad
pad
The 1624 Scherer Organ at St. Stephans in Tangermnde in north Germany was restored in 1994 by Alexander Schuke of Potsdam. With one-half of the original pipes remaining, including samples from all but four original stops, it is said to be the only large organ of the early Baroque to be returned to its original state. Thus, it joins the recently restored Schnitgers in Hamburg and Uithuizen as among the more important restorations of Baroque Europe. Christoph Lehmann plays very well a program of appropriate works for this early baroque organ. Click ikon for repertoire
