With album notes by no less a figure than Marie-Claire Alain, this interesting and very enjoyable release from the superb French organist Bruno Morin, a stellar student of Ms. Alain, reestablishes a tradition of playing these works on the organ alone, transcribing and filling out parts that an orchestra otherwise would have played, and especially taking advantage of the Pedal clavier which did not exist on British organs Handel’s his day. Morin plays five concertos on a very good sounding organ (3-59) rebuilt in 1992 by Michel Gaillard in the fine acoustics of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Boulogne sur Mer. Containing 24 works on 3-CDs, this set must be the most complete of all claiming completeness in Mendelssohn’s organ works (a close contender is John Scott’s fine 2-CD set containing 16 works). Based on the complete works published by Bärenreiter in 1993-‘94 (also available from OHS), it includes recently discovered works. The multi-talented French virtuoso Jean-Baptiste Robin plays three Gottfried Silbermann organs in Rötha and Freiberg and the Johann Andreas Engelhardt organ (1845) in Herzberg-am-Harz. The excellent booklet includes notes on each work, an essay on the organs, their relevance to Mendelssohn, and their stoplists. Click the headline for titles and to order.

Fleury, Langlais, Tournemire were friends and maintained a mutual respect, and their prominence in 20th-century French organ culture is the basis of this program. Tournemire dedicated the Laetare office to Fleury, his assistant. Two organs are played wonderfully by François Lemanissier and they are located in Saint-Lô in northwestern France (Normandy). At Notre-Dame, the Kern firm revoiced the large 1968 Beuchet-Debierre 3m organ in 1987, and Fleury and André Isoir shared the dedication concert. At Sainte-Croix, the 1893 Louis Debierre 2-21 has been restored to its original specification. Click picture for repertoire
