Herzlich tut mich verlangen (Ach Herr, mich armen Sünder) BWV Anh II 47 / Anh III 172 (Johann Peter Kellner)
Herr Jesu Christ, wahr' Mensch und Gott ( 2 Vertonungen)
Es spricht der Unweisen Mund
Der Tag der ist so freudenreich (Ein Kindelein so löbelich)
Ach, was ist doch unser Leben BWV 743 (Variante) (2 Vertonungen)
Ach, was soll ich Sünder machen (mit 3 Variationen)
Anhang: Es spricht der Unweisen Mund (Transposition nach G, Tonart des neuen Evangelischen Gesangbuches)
Here is an explanation of these works by Franz Haselböck, who prepared this first edition:
During the Bach bicentennial celebrations in 1985, not only were the Neumeister Collection at Yale University and the Rinck Collection presented to the public, attention was also given to a previously little-known manuscript from the Rudorff Collection, preserved in the Music Library of the City of Leipzig under the call number Ms. R 24.
The present first performing edition includes the entire contents of this manuscript, that is, the seven organ chorales from the corpus of autograph manuscripts assembled in Leipzig by the music teacher and composer Ernst Friedrich Karl Rudorff (1840-1916). The manuscript consists of eight loose leaves enclosed in a blue dustcover on which Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy wrote the following title: J. S. Bach / Choralvorspiele, und / Figurirte Choräle / für die / Orgel ["chorale preludes and figured chorales for the organ"]. An annotation by Rudorff in the lower right-hand corner of the same blue dustcover confirms that the above title is indeed in Mendelssohn's hand: Der Titel Felix Mendels- / sohn's Handschrift, der / im Hause meines Großvater / Pistor als junger Mann / die Bach'schen Autographen / und Abschriften ordnete. / E. R. ["title in the hand of Felix Mendelssohn, who, as a young man, sorted the Bach autographs and manuscript copies at the home of my grandfather, Pistor. E. R."].
During the 1820s Felix Mendelssohn and his sisters maintained friendly relations with Betty Pistor, who was later to become Ernst Rudorff's mother. It was at the house of her parents that Mendelssohn became acquainted with Pistor's collection of autographs, which he put in order because of the compositions by J. S. Bach it contained. Regarding the origins of this collection, Rudorff himself provided the following information in a remark at the head of the catalogue: "In the early years of this century [meaning the 19th-Century; Pistor acquired the collection in Berlin in 1827] my grandfather, the privy postal councillor Carl Pistor, acquired at auction a collection of musical manuscripts and prints deriving at one remove from the estate of Friedemann Bach. Another who took part in the bidding was Zeiter, who, after my grandfather had acquired these objects, applied to him the next morning with a request to relinquish the manuscripts to him at their auctioned price. This request was turned down."
Five of the seven organ chorales in Ms. R24 did not find a place in Schmieder's catalogue of Bach's ouvre [second edition, Wiesbaden, 1990] the chorale variations on Ach, was ist doch unser Leben are an abridged version of BWV 743. The first composition in the manuscript is not by J. S. Bach but by Johann Peter Kellner (1705-1772), who was a cantor and organist in Gräfenroda (Thuringia) from 1728. Kellner was a close friend and admirer of J. S. Bach. Although no concordances have been discovered to date, the compositional texture and style of these five practically unknown chorale settings, being thoroughly comparable to the Neumeister Chorales, suggest with great likelihood that they are the work of Johann Sebastian Bach. They shed interesting light on his early artistic development.
It remains to extend my cordial thanks to the Music Library of the City of Leipzig for graciously granting the right to reproduce these works in print.
Franz Haselböck
