Words of Albert Schweitzer and the Music of Bach Thurston Moore created this “musical dramatization” using the philosophical writings of Albert Schweitzer (organ theorist, organist, physician, philosopher, editor of Bach’s organ works, 1952 Nobel Peace Prize laureate) interspersed with Bach organ works and 276 images viewed by the audience. On this CD, Robert Thurman speaks the text and Gail Archer performs the seven organ works. The CD is both an enjoyable and moving program as well as a “preview” of the entire production. Churches, AGO chapters, etc., can use this CD to help their consideration of whether to present the full program for an audience.

Bach: Art of Fugue Bach’s Art of Fugue functions in many ways as an instrumental counterpoint to the B-minor Mass, his last vocal work of the late 1740s. It has aesthetically nothing in common with contrapuntal and fugal treatises, and it doesn’t want to be a theory textbook. It represents a very personal statement concerning the art of composition, a deliberate synthesis of theory and practice in Bach’s very own language. Ullrich Böhme, organist of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, plays the autograph version on the historic Riepp organ in Ottobeuren.

The New Bach Organ in St. Thomas Church, Leipzig The new Bach organ at Thomaskirche in Leipzig, where J. S. Bach was active for 27 years, replicates the one of 60 ranks that Bach knew as a youngster in his hometown of Eisenach. Because it must have had strongly formative influences on J. S. B., the replication of this long-extinct organ has drawn much interest. Among its many features is tuning to the “choir pitch” of Bach’s time, A=465 Hz., as well as a device which lowers the pitch of the entire organ two semitones to baroque chamber pitch, A=415 Hz, for performance with instruments. The player is Ullrich Böhme, the current organist at Thomaskirche. Works are by the Bachs: J. S., J. C., and C. P. E. Click ikon for repertoire
